Brad received his BS and Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee in the laboratory of Dr. Gary Stacey, where he focused on the symbiotic association of Bradyrhizobium japonicum with soybean. During this time, his research interests were in the area of host-symbiont specificity, specifically working to understand the structure-function relationship between recognition and synthesis of the Rhizobium Nod factors. This work culminated in the identification and characterization of the first chitin binding protein in soybean. Following his Ph.D. studies, Brad moved to Japan where he worked in the lab of Drs. Naoto Shibuya and Eiichi Minami, studying host-pathogen interactions in the rice-Magnaporthe grisea association. Read more |

Patricia Santos finished her university degree in Biology in 1996 and joined the group of Professors Manuela Chaves and Joao Santos Pereira (Dept. of Forestry Engineering, School of Agriculture, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal) under a research grant to work on physiological evaluations of different plant species, namely Lupinus albus, Cynara cardunculus, Quercus suber, and Solanum tuberosum, subject to environmental stresses like elevated CO2, drought, and cold acclimation. Before joining the Day lab, Masaki worked for 10 years (1999-2009) at the National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences, Japan in the labs of Dr. Masamichi Nishiguchi and Dr. Hiroshi Takatsuji. In the Takatsuji lab, he focused on plant activator-induced resistance in rice and identified the rice WRKY45 gene. This work showed that rice WRKY45 plays a crucial role in BTH-inducible blast resistance (Shimono et al., 2007). In parallel with his work at institute, he received his Ph.D. at Tsukuba University in 2008. Read more |

Yi-Ju joined the Day lab in June of 2012 after completing her PhD in Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research and the Sainsbury laboratory, under the direction of Dr. Silke Robatzek. During her PhD studies, Yi-Ju examined the dynamic and subcellular changes in Arabidopsis-downy mildew interaction and she took advantage of high through-put imaging to shed light on the regulation of membrane trafficking in Arabidopsis. At MSU, Yi-Ju is currently working on the activation and regulation of resistance signaling through the actin cytoskeleton. Read more |

Katie has spent nearly 10 years at MSU, either working or (sometimes) studying. The only native Michigander in the Day lab, Katie grew up on the shores of Lake Huron in Oscoda, MI. Katie joined the Day lab in Spring of 2009 as a rotation student and then joined for good in August of the same year. Before seeing the light and switching to plants, she spent 2 years working with Dr. Narayanan Parameswaran (Dept. of Physiology, MSU) on toll-like receptor signaling in cell culture and in vivo models with an emphasis on scaffolding proteins Arrestin 2 and 3. Katie is currently working on unraveling the connection between actin and Arabidopsis defense responses to Pseudomonas syringae. Read more |

Originally from central Indiana Alyssa spent 4 years at Butler University studying biology and chemistry and researching water lily phytochromes. She interned at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and worked on rootknot nematodes. She arrived at MSU in fall of 2010, joining the graduate program in Cell and Molecular Biology as a PhD student. Read more. |
Liewei (Leo) Yan, Research TechnicianLeo joined the Day lab in the Fall of 2011, and is currently working on an NSF funded project to understand the role of the Arabidopsis innate immune signaling regulator, NDR1. Read more.

Alex Corrion, Research TechnicianAlex joined the Day lab in the Spring of 2012. He is a recent graduate of MSU, and is currently working on a NSF Arabidopsis 2010-funded project investigating the role of actin dynamics in resistance signaling in plants. |
Shubhi Kalwani, Undergraduate Research AssistantShubhi joined the Day lab in the Fall of 2011. She is currently a junior in the Lyman Briggs College at MSU, studying Human Biology. Read more. |
